The Impossibleness of Getting Business Managers to Think

Back in the day when I used to write about legal technology, I was always banging on about the that were was no point in spending money on new IT if the organisation wasn’t also prepared to change its business processes and culture. In the case of law firms this inevitably hit the brick wall of ‘lawyers aren’t secretaries and won’t use keyboards’.

Now I read — surprise, surprise — that organisations are hitting the same issues with their investments in AI/artificial intelligence (yes, we know they are still only machine learning systems). According to a study from BCG Gamma in the US: only 10% of businesses see significant financial returns on their AI investments. AND they found companies that made changes to their business processes and culture were fives times as likely to see significant financial returns from AI deployments as those that didn’t make these changes.

You can take a business manager to the technology water but you can’t make them think.
